The YouTube‑born horror that turned A24’s biggest box‑office win is finally streaming.

Kane Parsons’ Backrooms exploded onto the big screen this spring, turning a viral YouTube series into a $394 million global phenomenon. With a modest sub‑$10 million budget and an 87% Certified Fresh rating, the film eclipsed A24’s previous record‑breaker Marty Supreme to become the indie studio’s highest‑grossing release ever. The movie follows a struggling furniture store owner, Clark (Chiwetel Ejiofor), who discovers a portal to an endless maze of liminal spaces beneath his shop. When his therapist Mary (Renate Reinsve) realizes he’s vanished, she plunges into the same nightmarish corridors, racing against reality’s own memory glitches to rescue him. Supporting turns from Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett and Lukita Maxwell round out the psychological horror crafted by writer Will Soodik. After its theatrical run, Backrooms is set to debut on HBO Max on September 25, exactly four months after its cinema debut. The streaming launch caps a breakout year for YouTube‑originated horror, joining the likes of Markiplier’s Iron Lung and Curry Barker’s Obsession as proof that online creators can deliver both critical acclaim and blockbuster earnings.
